Four Things To Consider When Buying Hiking Boots
When we speak of hiking, we then have to think about hiking shoes and boots. To help you decide which is which, here are some things to consider.
1. Trip. Each hiking trip is different. Some will only take half a day, while others will take days and even weeks, which is of course depending on your preference. The kind of hiking trip you are about to embark will matter because there are hiking shoes that are made to be worn only for a particular trip.
For example, if you are going on day hiking only, the best hiking boots for this activity are those which are lightweight, flexible and made from breathable materials. These boots are not to be used for extended hiking because these are less durable and supportive than other types.
On the other hand, if you are going for a multiday hiking trip, then you might want to use extended backpacking and mountaineering boots. These boots are made especially for this kind of hiking trip and are made from durable materials. These boots are also designed to provide adequate support and can be used on and off the trail without affecting its efficiency.
2. Cut. Hiking footwear comes with a wide variety of cuts. Depending on your type of hiking trip, the cut will also vary. Low-cut hiking shoes can be used when you are hiking on a well maintained hiking trail since these shoes are made for lightweight travel only. It doesn't provide adequate ankle support so if you happen to get stuck in the mud and you force yourself out you might end up with a sprain. The low cut also allows particles like sand, grits and pebbles to get inside your shoes.
For moderate multiday hiking, you can always use mid-cut hiking boots. These boots wrap around your ankles, providing enough ankle support as well as keep debris from entering the shoes.
High-cut boots are best used for cross-country hiking and on and off the trail hiking. Hiking boots with this type of cut provide the much needed support, cushioning and protection each cross country and extreme hiker needs.
3. Materials. Hiking boots can be made from different materials. Each type of material has its pros and cons. The material will also affect the durability as well as the breathability of your hiking boots.
There may be a wide array of materials available for hiking boots; however, it doesn't really affect much of the performance. Whatever hiking material you choose will really depend on your preference. Just choose something that is durable, breathable as well as waterproof.
4. Fit. Always make sure that you wear something that fits you. It should neither be too small nor too large for you. If you wear hiking boots that are too small for you, you might end up not finishing the trip simply because your feet hurt and you have blisters because of the boots rubbing against your feet. If you wear hiking boots that are too big, chances are you will end up with an injury because your hiking boots won't be able to provide the support your feet require.
